Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown and Guy Ritchie’s Lock Stock,.. are both prime examples. So too is the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn’s low-budget, arthouse noir Drive.

It’s one of the best pieces of music you could possibly buy in recent years. Built on retro synths, electronic touches and seductive vocals, it screams eighties cool and follows perfectly in the films unpredictability and highly addictive nature.

The soundtrack is a tour through mainly short scores of bliss and serial synth made landscapes made specifically for the film itself, like ‘I Drive’ and ‘Rubber Head’.

But within it are four superb cohesive stand out tracks that are sure to melt even the coldest of souls. The instrumental and slightly sinister ‘Tick of the Clock’ by Chromatics, leading track and film opener ‘Nightcall’ and my two favourites; the uplifting ‘A Real Hero’ by electronic Composer College, featuring Canadian duo Electric Youth, and heart-stopping ‘Under Your Spell’ by also Canadian band Desire.

‘Nightcall’ deserves its extra props as an amazing pop anthem too. Featuring Brazilian lead singer of CSS, Lovefoxxx, it bares all the characteristics of its producer father, Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Invoking an image of robot-meets-girl-on-a-dark-dance-floor kind of thing.

­True watching the film does add something when going through these tracks, even if it is just being transfixed by Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan’s lengthy, passionate silences. But such is Drive‘s sonic beauty and rare retro quality that it stands out as a great project no matter what the aesthetics.

There is such much amazing new electronica around at the moment and here’s another.

After turning heads last Spring with debut track ‘Blisters’, 18-year-old producer Jack Colleran also known as MMOTHS is about to drop his self titled debut EP on March 5th – for free download.
Disregarding genre conventions, the Ireland-based producer makes the sought of music that melts the soul. Cinematic and calm with hint of sparse synth beauty the sounds are truly mesmerising.

‘Heart’ featuring the aurally seductive vocals of Keep Shelly In Athens, is the first track of the EP, and you can download for free via his facebook.

A rare latin classic from the legendary Lebron Brothers, mixing a soul attitude with salsa rhythms.

We stumbled across this gem of an artist from Oakland, CA and we quickly fell in love.

Soulful and gripping, her gentle but weathered voice creates a calm we’re not quite use to. Her music has a wide mix of acoustic, folk, soul and hip hop influences with hints of rare groove and funk, making for this exceptional debut EP — From Her Eyes.

We can’t get enough of new hip hop grew — Clear Soul Forces.

Representing Detroit, ‘Get Know Better’ is their first single from their debut Detroit Revolution(s) Produced by KanKick and dropping in March.

With a nice hunger for simplicity, a head-jerking beat and dope rhymes, this laid-back beauty draws comparisons to Souls of Mischief and that whole late 90′s flavour.

Blending all the best bits of hip hop, funk and soul we tend to represent his selection choice couldn’t be more supreme. Add to that the mix is taken all exclusively from vinyl, not a Serato in sight, it makes the goodness extra special.

With his dedication to old and new, we have come to love Skeptik over the years for the music he represents. And now with two pending albums dropping in 2012 we’re expecting big things from him this year. We’ve also been told there’s a super special announcement concerning those projects too, but mums the word for now.
