We are truly blessed to welcome electronic/cinematic composer Hiatus for our guest mix series.

Since he released his debut album Ghost Notes at the end of 2010, which included the paralysing ‘Save Yourself’ and stunning ‘Insurrection’, Hiatus has been hailed by the likes of BBC Radio 1′s Annie Nightingale, 6Music’s Huey Morgan, Tom
Robinson, Nemone, Steve Lamacq and recently XFM’s Eddy Temple-Morris who billed the atmospheric wizard as one of his rising stars for 2013.

May 13th sees the release of his gorgeous and much awaited second album Parklands, which contains the beautifully haunting lead single ‘We Can Be Ghosts Now’.
The single features long-term singer/songwriter friend and collaborator Shura and is another reunion since lament to lost love ‘Fortune’s Fool’ which once again cements the pair as a beacon for bedroom electronica fans the world over.

For his Beatnik mix, Hiatus has gone beyond the abilities of most, painstakingly exploring and compiling a spectacular tracklist inspired by his love for film soundtracks.

“Film music has been a huge influence on me since childhood: one of my earliest musical memories is of my dad rigging our television to a tape recorder so I could copy Toto’s closing theme from Dune over and over until it filled both sides of a 90-minute cassette. I’m not sure what it is about soundtracks that have haunted me over the years, but I think a big part of it is the narrative factor – the best soundtrack music lends an orchestral score to the story of our own lives, and can make even the most mundane moments seem lifted from the silver screen. This mix features plenty of my favourite pieces from the 80s to the present day, from major releases to minor arthouse movies. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.” – Hiatus

This week our guest mix comes courtesy of Scooter Oyama AKA Go Yama.

Hailing from San Diago, the jazz guitarist and beat maker fuses tripped out hip hop beats with the pull of instruments and live looping. A sound that is captured perfectly with his incredible remix of MF Doom’s ‘It Ain’t Nothing Like’.

For his Beatnik mix Yama has put together a interesting collection of jazz musicians reinterpreting contemporary greats, such as Michael Jackson, Radiohead and J Dilla. It’s also a fitting companion piece to last weeks mix from Metabeats.

“As producers we always sample and have new interpretations of old tracks, so I figured it’d be cool to look at how jazz musicians “sample” or “interpret” now. So my mix is all jazz groups doing jazz versions of modern tracks.” – Go Yama

Phoria are a stunning new Brighton based band that are taking the internet by storm and fast becoming the next best kept secret.

The paralysing ‘Red’ by far is their beacon of light.

Combining beguiling melodies, elegant arrangements and ethereal vocals mixed with the odd injection of analog recordings and trip-hop-esqe influences, they produce beautiful and eclectic music.

The next Radiohead for a new generation.

Find out more about the band and buy the debut EP from Akira Records.

Creative Director Ali Raymond drops his midweek mix. A varied and eclectic selection of our daily recommendations —old and new— that are at the centre of what we do here at Beatnik.

“Beginning with a selection of chilled vocal tracks old and new that recently took my breath away, I decided to finish with some dance and minimal inspired tracks. Watch our for the Ghostpoet and Kano dream collaboration too. I hope it gets you through the week and you discover something new.” — Ali Raymond

Main Attrakionz are amongst the new wave of Hip Hop labelled as Cloud Rap; an internet phenomenon which is basically influenced through the consumption of drugs. Hip Hop was a originally an instrument of expression and identity in which a lot of notorious rappers had to hustle drugs in order to make ends meet. Then came along the glamour and glitz which evidently killed the authenticity of Hip Hop.

So look at Cloud Rap as a sort of reversed revival of Hip Hop where the artists are speaking their intoxicated minds rather than their corrupt habits and where the internet has been crucial to the growth rather than the radio. With up-and-coming producer’s such as Clams Casino, Eric Arc Elliot, SpaceGhostPurrp, Robb Bank$, Main Attrakionz’ Grown Folk, and not forgetting Sumgii from UK’s Piff Gang; the production behind Cloud Rap is personally it’s finest quality.

To find out more just watch RBMA’ video series H∆SHTAG$; Episode 3 – Don’t Call It #CloudRap

Cloud Body is a favourite taken from Main Attrakionz’ Bossalinis & Fooliyones available on iTunes.
