The place to find and share independent music. From hip-hop to pop, dubstep to drum n bass; Beatnik is your filter.
For this fridays guest mix we have the retro-futuristic duo Futurecop.
Formed back in 2007, Manzur Iqbal and Peter Carol started to create music together that reminded them of their childhood. Since then they have gone on to tour all over the world receiving support and acclaim from the likes of Tiesto, Diplo, Annie Mac, even Kelly Clarkson, and all through out this journey their sense of nostalgia has remained central.
2013 has already been a big year for the Cop with the release of singles ‘Misanthropist Wolf’ and ‘Superheroes’ gaining major support. Plus with the planned release of two albums coming later this year things only seem to be getting bigger.
For their mix, Futurecop have put together a typically poppy retro infused collection of tracks to get your friday off to a good start. Or any day for that matter.
‘Our mix is a collection of tracks we love, vintage, dancey yet heartfelt. All the artists are people we really admire, because they break down genre boundries.’ – Futurecop

We are truly blessed to welcome electronic/cinematic composer Hiatus for our guest mix series.
Since he released his debut album Ghost Notes at the end of 2010, which included the paralysing ‘Save Yourself’ and stunning ‘Insurrection’, Hiatus has been hailed by the likes of BBC Radio 1′s Annie Nightingale, 6Music’s Huey Morgan, Tom
Robinson, Nemone, Steve Lamacq and recently XFM’s Eddy Temple-Morris who billed the atmospheric wizard as one of his rising stars for 2013.
May 13th sees the release of his gorgeous and much awaited second album Parklands, which contains the beautifully haunting lead single ‘We Can Be Ghosts Now’.
The single features long-term singer/songwriter friend and collaborator Shura and is another reunion since lament to lost love ‘Fortune’s Fool’ which once again cements the pair as a beacon for bedroom electronica fans the world over.
For his Beatnik mix, Hiatus has gone beyond the abilities of most, painstakingly exploring and compiling a spectacular tracklist inspired by his love for film soundtracks.
“Film music has been a huge influence on me since childhood: one of my earliest musical memories is of my dad rigging our television to a tape recorder so I could copy Toto’s closing theme from Dune over and over until it filled both sides of a 90-minute cassette. I’m not sure what it is about soundtracks that have haunted me over the years, but I think a big part of it is the narrative factor – the best soundtrack music lends an orchestral score to the story of our own lives, and can make even the most mundane moments seem lifted from the silver screen. This mix features plenty of my favourite pieces from the 80s to the present day, from major releases to minor arthouse movies. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.” – Hiatus

This week our guest mix comes courtesy of Scooter Oyama AKA Go Yama.
Hailing from San Diago, the jazz guitarist and beat maker fuses tripped out hip hop beats with the pull of instruments and live looping. A sound that is captured perfectly with his incredible remix of MF Doom’s ‘It Ain’t Nothing Like’.
For his Beatnik mix Yama has put together a interesting collection of jazz musicians reinterpreting contemporary greats, such as Michael Jackson, Radiohead and J Dilla. It’s also a fitting companion piece to last weeks mix from Metabeats.
“As producers we always sample and have new interpretations of old tracks, so I figured it’d be cool to look at how jazz musicians “sample” or “interpret” now. So my mix is all jazz groups doing jazz versions of modern tracks.” – Go Yama

We first heard of the Cardiff native and UK legend back in 2007 with his debut album Metaphysical which has since gone on to become a UK hip hop classic. He has also gone on to produce some of the best hip hop coming out the UK, and as one half of the electronic giants Darkhouse Family.
2013 see’s the release of his long awaited second album Caviar Crackle, which features the likes of Action Bronson, Oddisee & Quelle to name but a few.
For his influence mix, Metabeats has gathered an immense selection of tracks which were sampled by some of hip hop’s most famous tracks. See how many you can recognise.
“For this mix I wanted to have a bit of a geek out and play a bunch of samples, I’m sure you will no a fair few of these and how these tracks sound once chopped up with one of your favourite emcees on. It’s a homage to the digger. After all we would not have so many classic groundbreaking songs if wasn’t for them. I couldn’t help throwing a couple of jams that have been stuck into head the last few weeks also. Peep it and enjoy.” – Metabeats

Creative Director Ali Raymond drops his midweek mix. This week though instead of his usually varied ‘Beatnik Recommends’ series he has concentrated on his age old love for soulful and liquid drum n bass.
“The word drum n bass literally brings the chills out in some people. For many I’ve met they often only associate the genre with the hardcore element. One of my favourite brackets of music growing up was liquid drum n bass or that which was on a more soulful tip. It’s the kind of music that gets deep within you and feeds the soul. I hope you’ll find something you’ve never heard before and perhaps fall in love with DnB just like I did.” — Ali Raymond

After a short hiatus, we’re back with a new mix from Danish beat mystro Terry Tester.
First appearing on the scene back in 2009 with “The Yokohama EP” as one half of The Works, Terry has gone on to have production on the likes of BBE, Earnest Endeavours and Brownswood Recordings, as well as his own neck snapping debut album “Horses & Diamonds” which dropped last year.
So here at Beatnik we’re honoured to have Mr Tester grace us with a ridiculously eclectic mix. Pretty much any genre of music you can think of, its in there somewhere.
“Getting a little tipsy while rocking out to classics and should-be-classics. Keeping it varied. Mixing up genres, but never losing sight of the soul. Also threw a little Terry Tester exclusive in the mix. On the house tip for a change. Never before premiered. Enjoy.” – Terry Tester

We were first introduced to intriguing new producer Cuttooth when we came across his track ‘Peace’ featuring Bridie Jackson. Pensive and beautifully chilled we were instantly hooked by his subtle ambient electronica.
Here he offers a dreamy mix full of his electronic influences as part of our guest mix series.
“This is a laid back mix of abstract electronic stuff, really chilled and comedowny. I like to focus on timbre and tonal movement in my productions so this is what I’ve focussed on here. My favourite track on here is Asleep by Anthony Valadez and Anna Wise. I’d love to get Anna Wise on a track actually, her voice would sound beautiful over one of my beats…” – Cuttooth

But if you can allow yourself the opportunity its a division of music that has the ability to sooth the soul, warm the heart and uplift your mind” — Ali Raymond
