Take a deep breath, exhale, relax and then press play. Four Tet’s newest album is nothing short of magnificent.
That one word pretty much sums up this offering of mellow soul searching electronica from Kieran Hebden the genius behind Four Tet. Hebden has been highly recognised since 1998, through both work under his own name and that of Four Tet, for intelligently producing music that mixes Hip Hop, Electronica, Techno, Jazz and Folk genres, yet with this epic presentation the core taste is minding wondering House.
On There Is Love In You Hebden’s ability to unite a variety of simple electronic sounds with instrumental beats together with clever tweaks make for mystical thumbing music to tickle anyone with an ounce of rhythm.
From the looping vocals of brilliant opener ‘Angel Echoes’ it’s clear Four Tet is presenting a new breed of Electronic, one that this time paddles in house but would rather not soak itself in the bigger sense of the genre. The result – exciting and lengthy scores with monumentally huge build ups. The constant ringing and gonging of hang drums at the grounding level of all the tracks is another extra inch of perfect too.
It’s a headache to choose a favourite amongst the nine tracks, each resonating their own charm. ‘Plastic People’ beats the others on climatic builds, while orgasmic ‘Love Cry’ will have you above the clouds by the time the samba drum battery drops. ‘Circling’ sounds like a salute to French marvel Jean-Michel Jarre, and ‘Sing’, possibly the most obvious alliance to house music, thumbs the hardest. Walking beautifully along the thin line between complex layers and simplicity.
